Southern Alberta, September 2010, Mammals and Large Birds

We saw many spectacular mammals in both the mountains and the plains.
It was hard to beat the beauty of this male Antelope, whose mate is shown below.
We recorded 60+ bird and 15 mammal species.



Black Bears

Mammals - Waterton/Glacier: The black bears seen in Waterton had white marks on their chests: "Some specimens may develop a white "crescent moon" mark on the chest. This white mark, which is constant in Asiatic black bears, occurs in only 25% of American black bears" (Wikipedia).

In addition to Black Bears, there were Wapiti (ELK), Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goats, Mule Deer, White-tailed Deer, Chipmunk.

The goats were seen in Many Glaciers, USA. The Yellow-Pine Chipmunk was also seen at the Many Glaciers location. The Bighorn Sheep was at Waterton.

Raptors - open prairie and Cypress Hills: Red-Tailed Hawk, Swainson's Hawk, Prairie Falcon, American Kestrel, Northern Harrier, and Osprey. There seemed to be several colour and age varieties of the RT Hawk and the S Hawk.

Other larger birds: Flickers and Sapsuckers, Gray Jay, Red-necked Grebe, Common Merganser, Canada Geese and Wild Turkey qualify.

We did not record all the duck species we saw. The only shorebirds were a lonely Killdeer and about 20 Wilson's Snipe. There were Kingfishers in C Hills park.

Also Ring-billed and California Gulls. There were large flocks of blackbirds, mostly Brewer's and European Starlings.
